I’ve taken occasional flak for recommending Joe’s work in light of the fact that Joe and I are friends and sometimes writing partners. As if that might discredit my opinion. If anything, I think this means I know his work better than anyone. I’ve read everything Joe has written, and the uncut version of TRAPPED is, in my opinion, not only Joe’s best work period, but one of the great horror novels ever written. And I mean REAL horror. Like Ketchum, Laymon, King, at their darkest, most terrifying. I’m not saying that Joe won’t ever top this book, I just don’t see how. When all is said and done, years and years from now and Kindles are thought of with a smirk like Michael Douglas’s brick-sized cell phone in Wall Street, TRAPPED will be considered Konrath/Kilborn’s magnum opus. Please read the Uncut Version. I read it in a single sitting one night, never went to bed, and could not believe what I was reading. This is a special one.
This review is from: Trapped (A Novel of Terror) (Kindle Edition) Just finished Trapped and Konrath’s other new release Endurance (A Novel of Terror) and both will keep me awake at night, listening for things that go bump in the night!Living in an RV in the backwoods adds an additional element of fear while reading Trapped. I can easily imagine disappearing in the swamp out back, living out the terror of the characters in this book. There were several surprises in the book (who are the bad guys?) and being originally from Michigan myself, it added something to my late-night page-turning.The faint-of-heart and those that don’t enjoy pure gore and terror should avoid this book and find something tamer. But fans of Konrath’s brand of horror will not be disappointed and will stay up late enjoying the chills running down your back.Caution! If your plans for the summer include camping on a deserted island, you might want to rethink!
I may be alone in this assessment, but ENDURANCE was a far scarier and much more engrossing. I just couldn’t get into TRAPPED as much as I did with ENDURANCE. The Characters were not as engaging, the plot was not quite as intense, and I just didn’t think it was as much of a page-turner. Not that it didn’t have its scary moments. There was plenty of that. But, it wasn’t as much of a trill ride as his other book was, for me. That’s just my opinion, though. I’d still read other stuff by this author. ~KR~
This review is from: Trapped (A Novel of Terror) (Kindle Edition) I read both stories and would rate them both very good. However, I liked many parts of the 2nd (original version) better. I think the minimal sexual content removed to make the rewrite took away from the realism of the story (who was the rewrite for? were they trying to make the story a book for grade school kids to make book reports). The cause for Sara’s fears was better told in the original then in the rewrite plus Lester and Georgia’s first meeting was better. I also liked the very final ending in the original. If I had not read the rewrite first, I would have rated the original better – since I read one right after the other, I would have just preferred to have the few minor sections that were changed rather the the entire story to wade through. The rewrite did hold together better. I took one star away because when the author was telling us the thoughts of one or two characters, I thought he crossed the line and he misrepresented their thoughts. It is OK to have characters lie while saying things to other characters or have other characters mis-explain another characters thoughts, but you do not have a character mis-thinking. Overall, very good. I am very happy that Konrath is going directly to ebooks and is making more money plus getting us readers better priced material. I had never read a book by Mr. Konrath until I read “Origin” for free, then I read almost all and await his next. I also enjoyed “Endurance” which I thought was a bit more of a horror book then “Trapped”
This review is from: Trapped (A Novel of Terror) (Kindle Edition) Loved the book, although I was pretty grossed out (then again, that’s a plus for horror). The book was scary, gory, and had a couple of twists that made it kind of fun, too. And, you can’t beat the price! Thanks for self-publishing a great book at a very affordable price!
This review is from: Trapped (A Novel of Terror) (Kindle Edition) I just finished this after reading it in one sitting. No, it’s not a short book. No, it’s not a lazy weekend day for me. In fact it’s Monday and I had a ton of stuff I was supposed to do but I made the mistake of beginning “Trapped” this morning and couldn’t tear myself away to attend to the things I should have done. It was definitely a day well-spent!Jack Kilborn has done it again and in a big way. The breakneck pace of this book makes it one you won’t want to put down. This is the sort of read where you heave a shuddering sigh once you’ve reached the end. The plot was tight and the pacing just incredible. I really enjoyed the mix of characters in this book, from the ex meth-addict to the overweight sociopathic teenage girl. The author effortlessly keeps you glued to the action of three or four scenes all at the same time – mini-cliffhangers abound but before you can get mad at him for it, you find yourself completely engrossed with what’s happening to the character currently in the spotlight. This eBook edition includes the original uncut version as well as the version he toned down in an effort to please his publisher. I’ve only read the toned-down version at this point. I’m going to wait a few days before trying the uncut version, though I fear it will lead to another “lost” day for me.
This eBook also includes previews of the author’s books, “Endurance” and “Afraid.” I HIGHLY recommend reading both of these, however “Endurance” may prevent you from ever booking a room at a bed & breakfast place in the woods. Then again, after “Trapped,” it’s going to be a long time before I contemplate going camping. I’m afraid Mr. Kilborn has thoroughly killed woodsy vacations for me for the foreseeable future.
This review is from: Trapped: A Novel of Terror (Paperback) This book is so poorly written that I gave up before I even got to the gore….foolish dialog (“my bad???”) and non existent character development. Glad I only paid .99. Couldn’t wait to delete this from my Kindle. Save your money.
This review is from: Trapped (A Novel of Terror) (Kindle Edition) Absolutely loved this book. I read it on my Kindle and I have to say that I love that this author has let us get a glimpse at these books for such a reasonable price! I read both Trapped and Endurance and both books were brilliant. I am a fan of all types of books and I love this author despite the gore that is present in his books. Trapped kept me up reading until the whole journey was over, and then I had to read the original version too! I prefer the first version that included baby Jack. Definitely a book I will be telling my friends about…I just hope that it will be available in print soon!
This review is from: Trapped (A Novel of Terror) (Kindle Edition) I am a fan of Afraid, Serial, and lately, Endurance… Trapped did not disappoint one bit! Made me a believer in that there can be really scary stories out there that freak you out but still grabs you by the shirt collar and refuses to let you go!I was not sure if I wanted to read the original or the second version, but I chose the one that Konrath suggested… the second one. After reading some of the reviews I am going to have to read the original version and see how that goes for me. It is a good thing that Amazon allows authors the opportunity to bring their work to us for a reasonable price and the book remains how the author envisioned it.
This review is from: Trapped (A Novel of Terror) (Kindle Edition) I love that Kilborn’s books are identified as (A Novel of Terror) in the title.Since reading Afraid and others last year I would say there is definitely a sub-genre for Kilborn’s work, Terror. Thank you for e-publishing Joe/Jack. Your work has become more accessible and is certainly better than the bestsellers on New York’s list.Once I recover from the re-write and the bad dreams I will venture into the original version. What a great bonus. Great atmosphere, terrifying descriptions and realistic characters make for an A+ read.
